Mariner’s Village

Mariner’s Village Green Infrastructure

The Mariner’s Village initiative is a transformative green infrastructure project located in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point community. Focused on a “neighborhood enclave” model, this project addresses critical environmental justice needs by converting residential corridors into resilient, lush spaces. In January 2024, Greening Projects reached a major milestone for this initiative, securing a $1.15 million grant from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to implement large-scale climate resilience measures.

Core Objectives

Mariner’s Village sits in a vital, industrial-adjacent corridor that has historically faced significant environmental challenges. Our work focuses on:

  • Stormwater Management: Utilizing specialized landscaping and permeable surfaces to naturally absorb and filter rainwater, preventing local flooding and reducing the burden on the city’s sewer system.
  • Canopy Expansion: Planting a robust selection of climate-adapted trees to provide natural cooling and improve air quality in a neighborhood that has historically lacked adequate tree cover.
  • Environmental Equity: Delivering high-impact urban greening to “equity priority” neighborhoods, ensuring that the benefits of climate resilience are accessible to all residents.

Fiscal Sponsorship and Project Oversight

In addition to project management, Greening Projects serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Mariner’s Village initiative. This role is crucial for a project of this scale, providing the professional administrative framework required by municipal agencies and large-scale donors.

  • Financial Stewardship: We provide the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status necessary to receive and manage the $1.15 million SFPUC grant and other private contributions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Our team handles the rigorous reporting, auditing, and insurance requirements mandated by the City of San Francisco.
  • Professional Management: By managing the “back office” of the project, including civil engineering contracts and topographic surveying, we ensure that funds are used efficiently and transparently to achieve maximum community impact.

Technical Implementation

Our involvement ensures that the project moves from a “vacant lot” vision to a permanent “community asset.” Key technical components include:

  • Site Analysis: Conducting topographic surveys and civil engineering reviews to ensure effective drainage and constructability.
  • Landscape Design: Selecting native, drought-tolerant species that support local pollinators and thrive in the Bayview climate.
  • Grant Execution: Managing complex municipal contracts to ensure improvements are delivered at no direct cost to local residents.
