Bernal Heights Rec Center Plaza

Help Shape the Future of Bernal Heights at the Rec Center!

We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the Bernal Heights Rec Center Plaza Renovation, a community-driven initiative led by Greening Projects. Our mission is to transform the underutilized blacktop into a vibrant, lush “Town Square” at the heart of our neighborhood.

This project isn’t just about physical changes; it’s about creating a welcoming space where neighbors can connect, play, and thrive. To make this vision a reality, we need your help!

The Vision: From Asphalt to Oasis

Our mission is to breathe new life into the Rec Center plaza, replacing barren asphalt with a sustainable, vibrant community hub. To spark our collective imagination, we’re launching a “living pilot” that immediately upgrades the space with lush planters and new trees for shade, creating a much-needed green canopy. The blacktop is being transformed into a social heart for the neighborhood, featuring comfortable tables and seating, along with a nature exploration area crafted from fallen logs. This temporary installation lets us see how these additions enhance our gathering and play before we break ground on a permanent transformation.

We have established a dedicated ‘Friends of’ group to oversee the project, but we need more ‘hands-on-deck’ to bring this to the finish line. We are looking for volunteers to join four key committees:

Design: Review community feedback and Rec & Park requirements to develop the final site plan.

Finance: Ensure transparency, monitor the project budget, and maintain financial controls.

Fundraising: Identify and pursue additional grants, donations, and funding streams.

Outreach: Keep the neighborhood informed about progress, events, and volunteer calls.
