3218 Mission Street Rain Garden

The 3218 Mission Street Rain Garden is a specialized green infrastructure project designed to manage urban stormwater while beautifying the Mission Bernal corridor. Located at a key transit and pedestrian intersection, this project replaces underutilized concrete with a high-functioning natural drainage system. By capturing and filtering rainwater on-site, the garden reduces the volume of runoff entering the city’s combined sewer system and mitigates local flooding.

Core Objectives

Stormwater Capture: Diverting rainwater from the sidewalk and adjacent building surfaces into a tiered basin designed for natural infiltration.

Water Quality Improvement: Using soil and specialized plant roots to naturally filter pollutants from street runoff before they reach the bay.

Urban Greening: Introducing hardy, water-wise vegetation to a densely paved urban environment, providing habitat for local pollinators.

Pedestrian Safety: Creating a visual and physical buffer between the sidewalk and street traffic to enhance the walking experience along Mission Street.

Technical Design & Function

Unlike a traditional planter box, a rain garden is an engineered depression. The 3218 Mission project utilizes specific layers of bio-retention soil and gravel to maximize its “sponge” capacity.

Inflow: Rainwater is directed into the garden through curb cuts or downspout diversions.

Filtration: As water pools in the basin, it slowly percolates through mulch and soil, which traps sediment and heavy metals.

Infiltration: Filtered water gradually recharges the groundwater or enters the drainage system at a significantly slower, cleaner rate.

Fiscal Sponsorship and Management

Greening Projects serves as the project lead and fiscal sponsor for the 3218 Mission Street Rain Garden. Our role ensures that this technical infrastructure is maintained to municipal standards and remains a functional asset for the neighborhood.

Grant & Fund Administration: We manage the dedicated funding required for the garden’s design, permitting, and construction.

Professional Oversight: Greening Projects coordinates with landscape architects and city agencies to ensure the garden meets all safety and environmental regulations.

Long-Term Stewardship: We organize the specialized maintenance required for rain gardens, including periodic sediment removal and seasonal pruning of bio-retention plants.

Environmental Impact

This project serves as a model for “low-impact development” in San Francisco. By managing water where it falls, the 3218 Mission Street Rain Garden helps build a more resilient city. Every gallon of water absorbed here is a gallon that does not contribute to sewer overflows during heavy storms.

Get Involved

The health of our rain gardens depends on community awareness. You can help by keeping the inlets clear of trash or by supporting our maintenance fund.

Become a Rain Guardian: Help monitor the garden during storm events to ensure water is flowing correctly.

Support Urban Resilience: Your donations help us implement more rain gardens at critical intersections throughout the district.
