Project Overview: Kimbell Community Garden
The Friends of Kimbell Community Garden is a neighborhood-led initiative dedicated to converting approximately 5,500 square feet of underused land at the Kimbell Recreation Area into a vibrant urban garden. Located at Geary Blvd and Steiner St, the project serves a diverse coalition of neighbors from Japantown, NoPa, the Western Addition, and beyond.

Kimbell Community Garden
Mission and Vision
Greening Projects provides the professional framework and fiscal sponsorship to empower this community vision. The goal is to create a sustainable environment where nature and community thrive together. Key pillars of the project include:
- Radical Accessibility: Ensuring nature and fresh food are not luxuries by building 45+ raised beds and ADA-compliant pathways.
- Community Stewardship: Designing the space with local voices to ensure long-term neighborhood ownership.
- Ecological Resilience: Utilizing “smart greening” practices to manage stormwater and reduce the urban heat island effect.
The Growth Roadmap
The project is organized into four distinct development phases, with an estimated total budget of $900,000.
1. The Seedling ($100,000): This initial phase focuses on site activation. It includes soil testing, arborist reviews, topographical surveys, and the finalization of city-approved blueprints.
2. Deep Roots ($300,000): This stage establishes the core infrastructure. Efforts focus on protecting existing tree root zones (Stone Pine, palm, and olive), installing main water lines, and laying foundations for accessible pathways.
3. Branching Out ($600,000): Expansion of accessibility and utility. This includes completing perimeter fencing, installing pedestrian and truck access gates, and building essential facilities, such as the tool shed and potting tables.
4. Stone Pine Canopy ($900,000): The final stage brings the garden to full bloom. It involves building the raised garden beds, planting herb and pollinator gardens, and installing community art and seating. This phase also establishes a maintenance endowment to ensure the garden’s future.
Strategic Impact
The Kimbell Community Garden serves as more than just a place to grow food. It is designed to enhance physical and mental well-being, increase social cohesion across diverse groups, and provide hands-on environmental education for all ages. By partnering with Greening Projects, the initiative applies professional-grade planning and project management to a grassroots community dream.
