Project Overview: Ridge Lane Neighbors
Location: Ridge Lane (connecting Josiah/Howth Avenue to San Jose Avenue), San Francisco, CA
Website: ridgelaneneighborssf.org
Ridge Lane Neighbors is a community-led initiative dedicated to reclaiming and beautifying a long-neglected city-owned right-of-way. The project aims to transform this hilltop corridor into a safe, sustainable, and vibrant public greenway that connects the surrounding neighborhoods and offers a scenic pedestrian path.

Ridge Lane Neighbors
The Site
Ridge Lane serves as a vital pedestrian link along the border of the area historically known as Columbia Heights. For decades, the path suffered from illegal dumping, overgrown invasive vegetation, and erosion. By activating this space, the project seeks to improve neighborhood safety, increase local biodiversity, and provide residents with a functional outdoor commons.
Key Initiatives
Habitat Restoration: Replacing invasive species with drought-tolerant California native plants to support local pollinators and birds.
Infrastructure Improvements: Creating a navigable and safe walkway to improve transit access and neighborhood connectivity between Josiah/Howth and San Jose Avenues.
Urban Greening: Implementing sustainable landscaping techniques to manage erosion and enhance the natural beauty of the hilltop.
Community Stewardship: Hosting regular volunteer workdays to maintain the trail, foster social connections among neighbors, and ensure the long-term health of the greenway.
Future Vision
The ultimate goal of Ridge Lane Neighbors is to create a fully realized “linear park” that honors the area’s natural topography while serving as a model for repurposing neglected urban parcels for the public good.
Fiscal Sponsorship and Partnership
Ridge Lane Neighbors works closely with city agencies and local land-use organizations to advocate for permanent improvements and official recognition of the lane as a protected public space. Through grassroots fundraising and volunteer labor, the group demonstrates a successful model of urban stewardship that empowers residents to shape their immediate environment.
