Fiscal Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions

What is fiscal sponsorship?

Fiscal sponsorship is a formal partnership where Greening Projects (a 501(c)(3) non-profit) provides legal and tax-exempt status to community-led initiatives. Under our program, your project operates as an integral part of our organization, allowing you to focus on your mission while we handle the administration.

Why does our project need a sponsor?

Most foundations and government agencies only award grants to registered 501(c)(3) organizations. By partnering with us, your project can apply for these grants and accept tax-deductible donations immediately, leveraging our established nonprofit status.

Who owns the project’s assets and equipment?

Since the project operates under our legal umbrella, Greening Projects legally owns all assets acquired by the project. This includes tools, materials, equipment, and intellectual property (such as logos or research) purchased with project funds.

Why is this ownership structure used?

This structure is designed to protect both the project and the community:

IRS Compliance: To maintain the tax-deductible status of your funding, the law requires that the 501(c)(3) sponsor maintain oversight of how funds are used. Legal ownership demonstrates that the funds are serving their intended charitable purpose.

Liability & Insurance: Because the assets belong to Greening Projects, our insurance can often cover your project’s equipment and activities, protecting your team from personal liability.

Long-term Stewardship: We ensure that tools and funds remain dedicated to the community mission. If a project lead moves on, we ensure the resources remain with the neighborhood project they were intended for.

What happens if our project becomes an independent nonprofit?

We love seeing projects grow! If your initiative eventually becomes an independent 501(c)(3), our agreement includes a “Spin-Off” clause. This allows us to transfer the project’s assets and remaining funds to your new organization so your work continues without interruption.

Does Greening Projects charge a fee?

Yes. To cover the costs of insurance, professional accounting, and the staff time required for compliance and reporting, we retain an administrative fee (typically 10–15%) of the project’s revenue.
