Mayflower Stairs Transformation
The Mayflower Stairs project is a community-driven initiative dedicated to transforming a neglected hillside stairway into a vibrant, sustainable green space. Located in the heart of our neighborhood, these stairs serve as a vital pedestrian link that has historically suffered from overgrowth and erosion. Through strategic urban greening and habitat restoration, Greening Projects is working to turn this transit corridor into a thriving “vertical garden” that benefits both people and local ecology.

Mayflower Stairs Transformation
Core Objectives
Public Space Revitalization: Clearing debris and invasive species to create a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for neighbors and commuters.
Habitat Restoration: Planting California native species that support local pollinators, such as butterflies and bees, while requiring minimal supplemental water.
Erosion Control: Utilizing deep-rooted plants and sustainable landscaping techniques to stabilize the hillside and manage stormwater runoff effectively.
Pedestrian Connectivity: Enhancing the aesthetic and functional quality of the stairs to encourage walking and neighborhood exploration.
Implementation and Stewardship
Greening Projects approaches the Mayflower Stairs as a long-term ecological asset. Our strategy involves a seasonal cycle of care that ensures the space remains healthy and resilient.
Restoration Phase: Removing non-native weeds and preparing the soil with organic mulch to retain moisture.
Planting Phase: Installing climate-adapted shrubs and groundcovers during the rainy season to establish strong root systems.
Ongoing Maintenance: Coordinating regular community stewardship days for pruning, weeding, and trash removal.
Fiscal Sponsorship and Support
As the fiscal sponsor for the Mayflower Stairs, Greening Projects provides the necessary administrative and financial oversight to make this vision a reality. Our role includes:
Fund Management: Hosting the project’s dedicated fund, allowing for tax-deductible donations and professional grant administration.
Permitting and Liability: Navigating the city’s regulatory requirements and providing insurance coverage for volunteer workdays.
Community Resource Hub: Offering technical expertise and tools to empower local residents in their stewardship efforts.
