Transform Your Community: Join the Tompkins Stairway Garden Volunteers!
Turn Concrete into Color, Trash into Treasure
What was once a neglected, trash-covered hillside in San Francisco has blossomed into a vibrant community oasis – and you can be part of its continued transformation! The Tompkins Stairway Garden proves what dedicated neighbors can achieve when they come together.
Why Volunteer With Us?
- Experience the joy of nurturing a drought-tolerant garden that blooms year-round.
- Connect with nature and neighbors in the heart of the city
- Learn sustainable gardening practices that you can apply at home
- Make a visible difference in your community’s green spaces
Our colorful tiled stairway, inspired by the “Steps to Peace” created by youth in Syria, has become a beloved pedestrian corridor serving the Alemany Farmers’ Market, local schools, and shopping areas. In 2019, we proudly received San Francisco Beautiful’s Placemaking Award for creating a meaningful public space that strengthens community bonds.
