Visitacion Valley Greenway

Project Overview: Visitacion Valley Greenway

Location: Campbell Avenue (spanning six blocks), San Francisco, CA

Partners: Greening Projects, Trust for Public Land (TPL), San Francisco Recreation and Parks, and SF Water Department

The Visitacion Valley Greenway is a transformative “linear park” consisting of six interconnected garden lots that step diagonally down a San Francisco hillside. Once a series of vacant, neglected parcels within a San Francisco Water Department right-of-way, the Greenway has been reimagined over the last 25 years into a vital community corridor. It serves as a model for how land acquisition and grassroots advocacy can address a critical shortage of public open space in urban neighborhoods.

A Multi-Faceted Urban Oasis

The Greenway is unique in its diversity, offering a specialized environment in each of its six blocks. These spaces are designed to serve the community’s recreational, social, and nutritional needs while fostering a deep connection to the natural world.

Key Components

Educational Hubs: Featuring two greenhouses, a native plant garden, and a dedicated herb garden, the Greenway acts as an outdoor classroom for horticulture, nutrition, and environmental advocacy.

Agricultural & Community Gardens: The Agriculture Lot provides space for growing fruits and vegetables, while the redesigned community garden plots prioritize accessibility for a diverse range of neighborhood gardeners.

Family & Social Spaces: The project includes the Hans Schiller Plaza (the park’s entryway), a children’s playground, a barbecue pit, and various public art installations.

Ecological Stewardship: By replacing vacant lots with curated greenery, the project has significantly improved local biodiversity and urban health.

Community Impact

The Visitacion Valley Greenway has fundamentally strengthened the neighborhood’s social fabric. By providing volunteer opportunities and a shared space for stewardship, it has empowered residents to take ownership of their environment. Its success was formally recognized in 2008 when it received a beautification award from San Francisco Beautiful.

Legacy and Future

What began as a desperate need for open space has evolved into a world-class example of urban reclamation. Through the sustained partnership between the Trust for Public Land and city agencies, the Greenway continues to provide a peaceful, productive sanctuary that celebrates the cultural and ecological diversity of Visitacion Valley.

  • Financial Stewardship: We manage donations and grants dedicated to the site, ensuring transparency in how funds are used for seeds, tools, and infrastructure.
  • Liability and Permitting: Greening Projects coordinates with city agencies to secure the necessary land-use permits and provides insurance coverage for all volunteer workdays.
  • Technical Support: We provide access to horticultural expertise and specialized equipment, helping volunteer leads execute complex restoration tasks.
