Revitalizing Urban Spaces: The Success of Greening Projects in San Francisco

The week of January 22, 2024, marks a significant milestone for community-driven greening projects. These initiatives are more than beautification efforts; they represent a collective endeavor to rejuvenate and care for the city’s public green spaces. Spearheaded by a dedicated agency with a wealth of expertise, these projects are a testament to the power of community involvement and professional guidance in urban environmental stewardship.

Empowering Community Stewards Through Education and Training

At the heart of these greening projects are our amazing volunteers. These volunteers are not mere participants; they are stewards of their environment. The program offers comprehensive education covering horticulture, sustainability, and environmental conservation. This educational component is crucial, as it equips residents with the knowledge and skills to effectively care for and maintain public green spaces.

3218 Mission Street

  • January 27, 2024: Volunteers helped clean the rain garden sumps and remove the top layer of soil. PUC will run an infiltration test of the subsoil to see if it will still work well as a rain garden. If so, the next step for GP will be to repair the irrigation system and landscape the area.

Bernal Wild

  • At the top of Bernal Hill lies a remarkable urban ecosystem, 20 acres of open space that is home to many native plants and animals that are still surviving in the heart of San Francisco.

Carolina Street Greenspace

  • Cathryn Blum has been diligently researching, planning, and acquiring garden furniture for the garden area and developing the best layout for neighbors to enjoy the green space.

César Chávez Greenway

  • January 25 and 26, 2024: Sandis surveyed the site to develop boundary and topographic plans, which should be available in CAD format by mid-February. At that point, Terrain Studio will start its preliminary landscape design.

Good Prospect Community Garden

  • January 22, 2024: Sandis surveyed the site to develop boundary and topographic plans, which should be available in CAD format by mid-February. At that point, Terrain Studio will start its preliminary landscape design.

Mariners Village – Bayview District

  • January 18, 2024: PUC awarded GP $1,150,000 for landscaping and tree planting to manage stormwater runoff in this neighborhood enclave in the Bayview. We expect to start work within the next 60 days once contracts are finalized and executed. See rendering.

Ogden Avenue Gardens

  • January 23, 2024: Sandis surveyed the site to develop boundary and topographic plans, which should be available in CAD format by mid-February. At that point, Terrain Studio will start its preliminary landscape design.

Treat Avenue Greenspace

  • January 22, 2024: Into The Streets/Treat Avenue Plaza Minigrants awarded GP $7,500 of a $15,000 overall budget to prepare a conceptual design for the Treat Avenue Greenspace. The project is an unaccepted street on Treat Avenue between 15th and Harrison Streets. We aim to convert this roadway into an agreed, open space. We are rendering in development.
