Transforming San Francisco’s Gray to Green: The Bernal Cut Rain Garden Project

Enhancing the Bernal Heights and Glen Park Green Corridor

The Bernal Cut represents a vital link between the Bernal Heights, Glen Park, and Mission District neighborhoods. By uniting existing and proposed green spaces, this initiative aims to replace underutilized concrete with functional, ecological landscapes. A primary focus of the current phase is implementing strategic rain gardens to manage stormwater runoff while beautifying the urban fabric of South San Francisco.

Engineering Sustainable Stormwater Solutions in the Mission

Our recent contribution to the Bernal Cut focused on the technical feasibility and hydrological design of these green interventions. To ensure the project’s long-term success, we conducted a detailed analysis of the local topography and drainage patterns.

Drainage Shed Mapping: We precisely mapped the drainage sheds feeding into the proposed garden sites to understand water flow during San Francisco’s peak rain events.

Hydrological Calculations: By calculating the specific catchment areas, we provided the data necessary to ensure the gardens can handle local runoff volumes.

Sizing and Placement: Based on the data, we estimated the optimal locations and dimensions for new rain gardens to maximize environmental impact.

Infrastructure Innovation: Bioretention Swales and Traffic Bulbs

The project goes beyond aesthetics by integrating civil engineering with community safety. The transformation involves significant concrete removal to make way for high-performance bioretention swales. These swales act as natural filters, removing pollutants from street runoff before it enters the city’s sewer system.

Multifunctional Design: Traffic Calming via Green Infrastructure

One of the most innovative aspects of the Bernal Cut plan is the design and construction of integrated traffic bulbs. These extensions serve two critical purposes:

Green Infrastructure: The bulbs function as rain gardens, absorbing water and increasing local biodiversity.

Pedestrian Safety: By narrowing the roadway at key points, these bulbs serve as a permanent traffic-calming measure, making the streets of the Bernal/Glen Park corridor safer for walkers and cyclists.
