SUMMARY:Bernal Heights Pop-up Town Square Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:Bernal Heights Pop-up Town Square\nEvent Dates: Daily starting Sept 6th\, through next February (and perhaps longer) \nVenue: Bernal Heights Rec Center Plaza \nThis Saturday\, we’ll be creating a Pop-up Town Square on the blacktop at the Bernal Heights Rec Center. The goal is to transform the asphalt into a lush\, welcoming space for the community and to initiate a broader conversation about revitalizing the Rec Center. In light of the ongoing playground closure\, the blacktop will feature a new play amenity: a nature exploration area made entirely of fallen logs and other natural materials. This is an investment in the Rec Center that utilizes temporary materials to quickly pilot ideas for how this space can be used\, with the hope that through this process\, we can explore how this place can best serve the neighborhood. We invite neighbors to come experience the space\, helping to test and refine what’s there and how it’s arranged. Neighborhood feedback will help ensure that the space reflects the desires of the neighborhood.  \nWho is hosting this event?\nThe Green Street Fund is putting on the event in partnership with Greening Projects and the Civic Joy Fund.  \nWhat’s the deal with this space? Will this space be made permanent? \n\nThis is a temporary activation of the blacktop that features simple amenities\, including seating\, shade\, a kids’ play area\, and lush greenery.\nPart of the impetus for creating this space was the realization that the playground would be closed for several months\, and that our kids should still have a place to play.\nAnother contributing factor was the long-term investment in this space envisioned by Greening Projects. While that vision makes its way through the grant process\, this project can help test different layouts\, amenities\, and materials that will contribute to the long-term vision. \nBernal Heights is a special neighborhood and deserves a special place to bring neighbors together. The intention of this pop-up is to help envision what a town square could look like in Bernal Heights.\nBernal Heights is hilly and dense\, and this location—one of the few flat spots in the entire neighborhood—presented an opportunity to invest in the neighborhood’s public spaces. \nThis Pop-up Town Square enhances the blacktop with amenities to make it a more prominent part of the Cortland commercial corridor and a more useful community resource.     \nModernizing the Bernal Heights Rec Center is critical\, and the creation of this town square provides flexible space for the community and an added impetus to invest in the Rec Center. \nThis event is designed to initiate a broader conversation with the community about the future of this space and to engage our civic leaders in understanding the desires of the Bernal Heights community for its public spaces. \nThis iteration of the town square\, and any that may follow\, is part of an engagement process to assess how well the space serves the neighborhood and how different design elements resonate with the community.\n\nAre there any other spaces in SF like this? \n\nOther San Francisco neighborhoods have created similar small\, magical community gathering places:\n\nPatricia’s Green in Hayes Valley includes a picnic area with tables/benches\, rotating public art\, and a children’s play area. \nThe Noe Valley Town Square is a community hub that regularly hosts free events\, including yoga classes\, concerts\, story time with the SF Public Library\, and a farmers’ market. \nLakeside Landing is a gathering space at the entrance of the Lakeside Village commercial corridor. Its greenery\, seating\, stage\, and lights provide a space for the local community\, transforming what was once an underutilized parking lot into a hub for local art\, culture\, and community. \n\n\n\nI have concerns about this project. To whom should I reach out? \nLuke Spray: luke@civicjoyfund.org

SUMMARY:Vision Boulevard Block Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us and learn more about Vision Boulevard.  \nThe Central Freeway stub has corroded the heart of San Francisco for six decades. It looms over Division and 13th Streets and carves into the nexus of centrally-located neighborhoods and City districts. It is a significant hazard\, with several of the city’s most dangerous intersections underneath or part of the Central Freeway. Toxic vehicle and roadway particulates adversely affect nearby residents and workers. It blocks countless benefits\, like desperately needed new housing\, new transit opportunities\, and green space. Its vestigial infrastructure is a barrier to neighborhood connectivity. It must go. \n \nEnter Vision Blvd\, a grassroots San Francisco campaign that calls for the complete removal of the Central Freeway once and for all. We are a group of designers\, public school educators\, traffic engineers\, and community members who deeply care about San Francisco and want to see it reach its full potential\, but we can’t do this alone. \n \nFor the first time since the inception of Vision Blvd\, we are entering a phase of important fundraising that will help us accomplish our goals. Here are the two main areas of need we are looking to address: \n\nResearch and Studies: Vision Blvd will help sponsor studies centered on transportation\, housing\, environmental impacts\, and opportunities for green space along the 13th and Division Streets corridor. Professionals with deep expertise will conduct these studies and help us develop a proposal that satisfies all stakeholders\, looks to the future\, and addresses all community needs.\nEvents & Organization: Vision Blvd is currently a pro bono effort. However\, there are various costs\, like maintaining our digital resources and creating promotional materials. We will also host various events all over San Francisco to highlight our effort\, spread awareness\, gather community input\, and have fun. For example\, we will host a block party on June 1st\, requiring City permits\, campaign materials\, tables\, canopies\, entertainment\, food and drinks\, and many other resources.\n\n\nVision Boulevard Block Party

SUMMARY:Green Space Celebration of Treat Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Join Greening Projects and Terrain Studios on May 18\, 2024\, for the second Fiesta del Espacio Verde de la Avenida Treat. \nGreening Projects and Terrain Studios will unveil a glimpse of Treat Avenue’s proposed future on May 18\, 2024\, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM\, during the second “Fiesta del Espacio Verde de la Avenida Treat” at Treat Avenue and 16th Street in San Francisco. \nThe Fiesta is a series of activations supported by “Into the Streets SF\,” a non-profit founded in 2023 that funds neighborhood collaborations that reclaim and environmentally regenerate San Francisco’s streets. \n“We’re excited to showcase the neighborhood’s ideas about transforming this street into something that benefits the Eastern Mission and the environment\,” said Jorge Romero-Lozano\, founder of Greening Projects. This non-profit organization specializes in creating as much green space as feasible within our built environment. “We know the Mission lacks green spaces for families but is also unprepared for climate change. Residents and business owners have been fighting flooding in this area for more than 150 years. Greening unaccepted streets like Treat Avenue connects two goals: creating open space for residents and room for the historic waters of Mission Creek.” \nDuring the first Fiesta\, the landscape architecture firm Terrain Studio solicited ideas from nearby residents about what they’d like to see in the now-paved avenue stretch of Treat. \nAccording to Scott Slaney\, Principal of Terrain Studio\, the discussion about transforming Treat Avenue into an ecologically resilient space demonstrated that nearby residents strongly preferred community access and use. \n“Based on the wealth of community input received\, we’ve developed concepts guided by what residents think matters most: a simple\, easily accessible space that makes it easy to walk\, bike\, and gather in this part of the Mission\,” said Slaney. \nSlaney will share renderings of four conceptual alternatives for this stretch of Treat Avenue\, one of San Francisco’s 2\,000+ unaccepted streets. \nView the Presentation\n“We see this activation as compatible with SFPUC’s efforts to improve drainage of this area\,” said Slaney. “We know that any thoughtful re-design of Treat Avenue is a plan best achieved by taking our time to work with the neighborhood and the city.” \n  \n\n\n\nGreen Space Celebration of Treat Avenue

SUMMARY:Treat Avenue Greenspace Activation
DESCRIPTION:SFMTA Street Closure Application \nPurpose of the Event(s): \nExtensive long-term interest is turning the reference street into a green\, open space. To that end\, Greening Projects (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) applied for and received a mini-grant from “Into the Streets” to popularize the proposed plan and help people visualize the proposed future green space. To that end\, a collaboration of people is working to develop these events and invite the community to provide input. \nThe event will entail the following: \n\nBlock the street at either end\, as shown on the attached site plan.\nThe street will be blocked\, in part\, with movable wooden planters\, which will help provide some of the “greening” efforts we are promoting.\nWe will provide information tables\, as well as activities for children\, such as face painting\, coloring\, and some arts and crafts\, which will reflect the following holiday cultures:\n\nSince the first event is on St. Patrick’s Day\, we want to include Irish culture in the activities.\nSince March 12 is the Mexica New Year\, we also want to include this holiday\, which celebrates indigenous and Latinx cultures.\n\n\nThere will be patio-style tables and chairs\, which will help people see the potential of turning this section of Treat Avenue into a green space.\nWe will also provide a chart and comment slips\, which people will use to provide input regarding what they want to see on-site if the street is turned into a public space.\nWe are also working with Latina Mission Moms on this event since they promote such space-making and opportunities for places to gather outside.\nWe have been in discussions with city agencies regarding the proposed future street-to-park conversion:\n\nJimmer Cassiol\, DPW\nPatrick Race\, Planning Department – Patrick expressed the desire to participate in this application and help facilitate the process.\n\nrace@sfgov.org\nDirect No. 628-652-7461\n\n\nJen Ferrigno\, District 9 legislative aide\n\n\nInput from the March 17 event will be used by Terrain Studio\, landscape architects\, to produce a site plan and rendering of what the future park conversion might look like\nThe May 18\, 2024\, event will be similar to the March 17 event\, but with the addition of presenting the landscape architects’ plans and renderings to the community\, which will help to confirm what people would like to have on the site\, as well as to submit to public agencies for the potential project.\n\n  \nTreat Avenue Greenspace Activation
